Starting an Indoor Mushroom Garden

Posted on Jan 25 2011 - 3:58am by Mike Lieberman

While I’m running the contest to win your own mushroom garden from Back to the Root Ventures, I am going to be growing the mushroom garden to see how it works.

Growing my own mushrooms is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a while. Most of the kits that I’ve seen use logs and require a damp, dark location, which I don’t have. That’s why I’m curious to see how this kit will do.

Plus mushrooms are crazy expensive in the store, and I’m all about growing my own food when I can.

The set-up was pretty simple. I’ll go over all of the steps after it’s finished.

In the meantime, don’t miss out on your chance to win your own Mushroom Garden kit by leaving a comment on the post in this link.

mushrooms are really easy to grow. i’m sure there is tons of resources out there for growing your own. i’ve seen it done in a big rubbermaid container under a bed or in a closet. the hardest part is getting the culture which you would likely need to order from someone for whatever mushroom you want to grow.

it looks like that box just has some grain medium in it which they’ve injected with the mushroom culture and allowed the mycelia to grow out. if you had the space you could sprinkly it in a bed of straw and get more mushrooms out of it.

I’ve heard about growing the mushrooms out of straw and hay. Will give this box a go first and see what happens.

Mike, do you have a link for growing mushrooms in hay or in a box?

Not off hand, but can certainly inquire about them.

Oooh, I’ve always wanted to grow mushrooms. Looking forward to seeing if your kit produces some good mushrooms.

Mike-seriously, I love the mushroom growing idea and can’t wait to see if I can grown my own as well. That being said- I have to thank you for taking out the time to answer comments and questions that people post on your FB wall and your website. We’re all busy and as someone who reads many blogs on raw/vegan eating, garden growing and being healthy in general…I, and I’m sure others, feel total gratitude when you take a moment out of your busy life to respond to those who take a moment out theirs, for you! 🙂 Can’t wait to see how the mushrooms turn out! Good luck

LOL By the way- I totally mean what I said. I’ve often told my husband “I can’t believe this guy responds to every single comment made to him. It’s amazing!” So it’s not about the contest-I just really wanted to tell you thank you! The contest is secondary by far. Believe it or not.

Hahaha. Right. Right. Sure…It’s all good. That’s what this all about connecting with and learning from each other. If you take the time out of your day to say something to me, I should show you the same courtesy.

BTW…to enter the contest, the comment needs to be left on the previous post talking about the contest. Not this post. I still appreciate the comment though 🙂

    How did it work out?

  17. Mike Lieberman June 14, 2011 at 2:49 am -

Worked out very nicely. Got some good harvests from them.

They are crazy expensive in the store. And require virtually no upkeep (weeding, etc.) like other plants. Oh, but to have the space for a soggy log outside or in a basement…

I really appreciate seeing your undertakings. I too live in an apartment–cramped and with no outdoor balcony or anything. It’s inspiring to watch you work in a small space and not allow that to limit your experiments!

I’m a vegetarian, so I use mushrooms in just about everything I cook. They work nearly perfectly in place of meat (eg tacos, quesadillas, pizza, grinders, stir fry, omelets, quiche…) for me, but the cost is prohibitive. And it’s hard to be inspired by those button mushrooms wrapped in cellophane that inevitably include clumps of potting soil in the container. Not appetizing.

Anyway, I’m so glad to learn about this product. Does this just work in a huge plastic container similar to your worm compost? Investigation commences…now!

    Thank you!

Thanks for the comment.. I’m not sure if it’ll work like that too. Sounds like you have an experiment to conduct.
